SketchUp extensions by Allvanti

Less hassle. More designing.

A model from 3D Warehouse that makes SketchUp lag. A row of lamps you line up by hand. A cabinet you draw line by line, then redraw when it needs to be wider. These tools take care of that part, so you can get on with the design.

Lighter models

Pull in heavy assets without the lag.

Models from 3D Warehouse, especially ones made in other software, often carry huge textures and far more triangles than anyone will see. On an older computer that means lag. On a phone or tablet it can mean a crash.

Step 1: Every material, heaviest first.Step 2: Click "3 maps" to see the photoreal maps hiding in a material.Step 3: Click a thumbnail to see the texture full size.Step 4: Check the heavy ones.Step 5: Compress: pick a maximum size and a target per image.Step 6: Done. 38 MB of image data is now 11 MB, and one Undo takes it back.
1/6 Every material, heaviest first.

Material Inspector

Find the textures that bloat your file

Every material in your model, heaviest first. In this example, a few 4096 px textures and one material's photoreal maps add up to 38 MB.

Check the big ones, click Compress, and pick a size: 1024 px, or 250 kB per image. Textures keep their real-world size, so nothing in the model shifts.

  • Photoreal maps count too. Normal and roughness maps can weigh more than the texture itself, so they're in the total.
  • Merge look-alikes, like "Oak natural" and "Oak natural copy", and remove the unused ones.
  • Click a row to select everything painted with that material.

Step 1: Everything SketchUp draws, heaviest first.Step 2: Check everything over 30k triangles.Step 3: Click Simplify to see what you checked.Step 4: Estimate shows what each strength would leave.Step 5: Done. Not happy with it? "Undo last batch" takes it all back.
1/5 Everything SketchUp draws, heaviest first.

Poly Slimmer

Thin out the geometry SketchUp struggles to draw

It lists your groups and components by what SketchUp actually has to draw: triangles times copies. A plant with 120k triangles used twice beats a sofa used once.

Before anything changes, it shows what each strength would leave. Pick one, click Simplify, and the whole batch is one Undo step.

  • Only smooth areas get thinner. Outlines, real corners, and material borders stay exactly where they were.
  • No new lines show up on your model.
  • Too little to gain? The item is left alone and marked "no gain".

Faster ideas

Try an idea, look, try another.

What if three lamps hung on this wall? They need to sit on one line, evenly spaced. By hand that's a lot of clicking and measuring before you even know if you like it. With True Up it's a click.

Step 1: Select the lamps.Step 2: Middle lines them up.Step 3: Space evenly spreads them out.
1/3 Select the lamps.

True Up

Align and space objects in one click

Select the lamps and click Space evenly. Want them level too? Click Middle. That's it.

Left and right mean what you see on screen, whichever axis that happens to be. When it can't tell which way you mean, it tells you instead of guessing.

  • Fixed spacing, like 120 cm, measured between gaps or centers.
  • Along a path: spread chairs around a round table or along a curved wall.
  • To a face: push a row of objects against a wall, with a gap if you want one.

Joinery

Draw a cabinet by typing its size.

Joinery is a lot of lines and a lot of measuring, and then the cabinet needs to be 10 cm wider. Joinery Kit builds doors, cabinets, windows, and stairs from their sizes. Change a number and it rebuilds as you type.

Step 1: Pick a base cabinet. Its sizes are on the right.Step 2: Type a new width and the cabinet rebuilds.Step 3: Drag Open to check clearances.Step 4: Or click Animate open to show what's inside.
1/4 Pick a base cabinet. Its sizes are on the right.

Joinery Kit

Doors, cabinets, windows, and stairs from a few sizes

Pick something from the library on the left and click Add new to model. Select it later and its sizes show up again on the right. Change any of them and the cabinet in your model follows.

Then open it. Drag the slider or click Animate open, and every door and drawer moves. It's handy for checking clearances, and it's a great way to show a client what's inside.

  • The library: base cabinets with doors or drawers, sliding and hinged doors, windows, and stairs.
  • Your own work stays put. Things you model inside a drawer move with it, and materials you apply to whole parts stay on after a rebuild.
  • Plain SketchUp geometry, in your model's units.

Who makes these

Tools I built for myself, shared with you.

I have a background in software engineering, and I model in SketchUp. I kept running into the same problems, so I built tools to fix them. I care about quality, even in my own scrappy tools, and I share them because they might help you too.

No subscription, no required updates, no nonsense.

Responsive

Keep SketchUp responsive

Big jobs run in small steps, so SketchUp keeps drawing and shows the progress instead of a frozen window. A whole batch undoes with one Edit › Undo.

Simple

Design quickly and accurately

Each tool does one job with plain options. It does the measuring and the clicking, so your attention stays on the design.
